THE DAMNED’s RAT SCABIES & FLIPRON’s BILLY SHINBONE : THE SINCLAIRS!
Review by Glass Onion
In 2019, what started out as a small side-project put together by superstar drummer Rat Scabies and acclaimed Flipron/Neville Staple guitarist Billy Shinbone quickly morphed into a world of psychedelic, gurgly, electronic soundtracks for their first and critically acclaimed 2020 debut album Sparkle. Now The Sinclairs are readying their second album, The Long Slow Death Of A Cigarette, which finds them breaking out even further, adding guest vocalists to a mix of skittery garage rock, arctic ambience, fuzzy orchestral pop, the odd dusty torch song plus an undulating Latin funeral coda. If the first album “made easy listening more difficult” then this new album is “technicolor noir.”
“We decided that we wanted some actual songs on this record,” says Scabies. “And we hit gold with our guest artists,” including Zumi Rosow of Black Lips, Kid Congo Powers of The Cramps/Gun Club/The Bad Seeds, Roger Chapman of iconic ‘60s band Family, and members of Japanese garage punk treasures The 5,6,7,8’s plus British actor Kevin Eldon (Hot Fuzz/Game Of Thrones)! “We wanted each track to be like a deep, smokey draw that burns off the one that comes before it. Sometimes smoldering, sometimes incandescent, and what you’re left with at the end is a funeral.”
For a taste of what’s in store, the band is releasing the album’s first single, a ripping surf-rock-esque instrumental “Ultra Splendid,” which the band declares, “crams masses of splendidness into a super short package of energy. All the good stuff in less than two minutes flat!” The hilarious performance video that accompanies the single is likewise a “cheerful revenge on the drunken, self-absorbed arseholes who crash the stages in pubs and clubs across the land” and guest stars Kevin Eldon as the continually thwarted vocalist.

The Bus Station Loonies - Black Rat and Prosecco, Live in Bristol
Review by: JOOLS GREEN
Legendary in the South-West of the UK, with their humorous infamy spreading far beyond, ‘The Bus Station Loonies’ have been inspiring young punks and entertaining the old ones for twenty-five years, dropping two studio albums; ‘Mad Franks Zonal Disco’ in 1999 and ‘Midget Gems in 2010, but as a dedicated live band, no studio release quite captures the charm and off the scale entertainment factor of ‘The Loonies’ live….. until now.
‘Black Rat and Prosecco – Live in Bristol’ was recorded “through the desk”, encapsulating that raw and exciting live feel perfectly, at The Exchange, Bristol in December 2014 while supporting ‘Lunatic Fringe’ with ‘Disorder’ and ‘East Town Pirates’ so happy memories for anyone who was at that gig or any ‘Loonies’ gig for that matter. It was also one of the last if not the last gigs with Steve Poundpants on bass, too many ciders have been quaffed since for the band to be certain of the facts.
One thing that is certain, entertainment-wise this is ‘The Loonies’ in their best form, ‘Wheelie’ is his usual engaging self, with no shortage of humorous banter between tracks, if this release doesn’t make you laugh or at least smile then you’re probably dead and your mates are too afraid to tell you.
Onto the important bit, the music. Into their forty-minute set they have managed to squeeze in pretty much all the live favorites, which also includes a few unreleased tracks; opening with ‘Playing Silly Buggers’ resplendent with crazy riffs and kazoo solos, a live favorite of mine, then the addictively up-tempo, short sharp ‘No Rules’, followed by everyone’s live favorite ‘Fancied by People I Don’t Fancy’ with its catchy groove and tongue twister chorus “I’m fancied by people we don’t fancy but the people I fancy don’t fancy me”, which seems straight forward until you try singing it, at speed.
‘Attack of the Molemen’ brings more kazoo solos, sadly at the end Wheelie announces that “I think we’ve got that bloody kazoo out of the way now!” because I love ‘Loonies’ kazoo solos, even more than I love Black Metal banjo solos (yes it’s a real thing!). Next an unreleased piece, the punchy up-tempo ‘Art or Arse?’ which asks that all-important question “Is it art or is it arse?!” …I still don’t know the answer but I love the song, the next number ‘The Last Post’ is dedicated to posties everywhere…but not necessarily for the reasons you might think.
Next another crowd favorite ‘Anarchists Make the Best Lovers’ which always gets the crowd singing, followed by another unreleased track ‘Humans’ which examines the human creature from a ‘Loonies’ perspective than ‘Cool Britannia Uber Alles’ another favorite of mine, hugely addictive with groovy second half leadwork, you can’t fail to dance around to this, closely followed by ‘Dick Dastardly’ one of “Poundpants” favorites, yes, it is about the antihero of the Wacky Races, addictive, very silly and utterly brilliant.
Then the catchy ‘Kill That Nazi (in my head)’ with its militaristic rhythms and groovy bass lines followed by the final unreleased piece the hugely humorous ‘The Messerschmitt Pilot’s Severed Hand’ …. which apparently is a sentient object …. with a mind of its own….. sounds like an excuse to me, a good one though, ending appropriately with ‘Bloody Drunkards’ which warns of the perils of drinking…… droopy willies and all that.
So, if you fancy a slice of “Old School, Anarcho, Cabaret Punk” then this is the album for you, it’ll put a smile on your face for sure. ‘Black Rat and Prosecco – Live in Bristol’ is available now as a digital download from https://loonies.bandcamp.com/music along with their other releases and accompanying paraphernalia and is currently much easier to get hold of than a bottle of Black Rat Cider….It’ll last longer too!! Go On, you know you want to!!
BURTON C. BELL, BIG PAUL FERGUSON, And MGT, RAMMSTEIN’S “DU HAST”
Review by Glass Onion
The latest reincarnation of Rammstein’s legendary “Du Hast” roars to the forefront as one of the premiere singles from the upcoming full-length feature, A Tribute to Rammstein, available worldwide on August 25th. This screaming single is born out of the electrifying alliance between former Fear Factory front man, Burton C. Bell, Killing Joke drummer, Big Paul Ferguson, and legendary goth-industrial guitarist, Mark Gemini Thwaite (MGT), who has worked with The Mission, Gary Numan, and Peter Murphy.
“Du Hast” was released in 1997 as the second single from Rammstein’s sophomore album, Sehnsucht (Desire), and served as a catalyst for their breakthrough into the Western mainstream. “Du Hast” thrust the German industrial giants into the spotlight after its appearance on the soundtrack for cinematic cyberpunk classic, The Matrix (1999), following the inclusion of two songs from their debut album, Herzeleid (Heartbreak) on David Lynch’s Lost Highway (1997).
The goth-industrial triumvirate of dark-electronic doyens, Burton C. Bell, Big Paul Ferguson, and MGT breathes new life into the neue deutsche härte anthem, with the pounding heartbeat of the kick drum pumping oxygenated blood throughout the body of this mechanized beast of a single, fueled by guttural death growls, screaming guitar arpeggiations, and hardwired dark synth.
Bell offered these enthusiastic sentiments:
I am honored to have been considered for this killer salute to Rammstein, and grateful that Brian Perera and Cleopatra Records directly reached out and texted me, “Can you sing in German?” I replied, “Sure!”, knowing full well I had never sung in German. I am especially thankful for my German “tutor”, Konstanze Louden, who graciously took the time to instruct me on correct German pronunciation!
It was a joy having the opportunity to work with two massive talents, Mark Thwaite (MGT) and Paul Ferguson (Killing Joke). I was inspired and energized to “make this song mine”. I dug deep into this track, and prepared myself accordingly. When I felt ready, working and recording in the studio with Alex Crescioni and Mark at Stygian Sound was a truly magical session, and a great privilege.
I am very proud of how this track freaking rocks, so much that I decided to present DU HAST as my “breakout debut.” It truly spoke to me. The original version will always reign, however if you plan to record a cover, make it your own, and make it sound freaking amazing. Honor the music!
I look forward to the single dropping and look forward to playing “Du Hast” live on tour! I have big plans on the horizon, please stand by!
