March 2023 – Singer-Songwriter Taylor Floyd

Punk Globe Interviews Multitalented Vancouver Singer-Songwriter Taylor Floyd

Interview By: The Floydian Device

Punk Globe: Hey Taylor, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Taylor: I’m a 22 year old local creative from Vancouver B.C. I work doing background acting for film & tv as I have done for the past 6 years. Before that, I explored countless interests such as attending 5 years in circus training followed closely by 3 years of hip hop dance training on 2 different multi award winning competitive teams. As a hobby, I admire fashion and enjoy building outfits to model for my self photoshoots over on my instagram: @TaylorFloydOfficial

Additionally, I’ve enjoyed singing for as long as I can remember. Throughout my childhood, my teens and now into my adulthood, singing has always given me such a strong feeling of release and has also given me an essential outlet for self expression and emotion regulation. As I embark on my journey into the music industry, I’m finally hoping to go from singing in my car to singing in the bars!

Punk Globe: What are some of your musical influences?

Taylor: I’m really into UPSAHL’s music right now. I think her sound is just so unique overall. She has such strong, clear vocals and her production is of such amazing quality! If a song of hers that I’m not quite yet familiar with starts playing, I’ll still immediately recognize it as one of hers before she’s even said a word. Her production is just so consistent and seems to be working so well for her. She definitely has some serious talent and I just can’t wait to hear what else she creates in the future!

Punk Globe: What’s the best concert you’ve seen recently?

Taylor: Seeing Billie Eilish perform live on her “Happier Than Ever” world tour was absolutely unreal. She’s just so incredible at everything she does. Her and her brother Finneas have accomplished so much so early in life and I believe they’re an inspiration to many young aspiring artists out there. I feel lucky to be growing up at the same time on this earth as them.

Punk Globe: You’ve just put out your first release.. A song called ‘Anxiety’.  What does this song mean to you?

Taylor: My song “Anxiety” is one I’ll always hold so close to my heart. One beautiful spring day in 2021, during an episode of unexplained anxiety, I suddenly felt the urge to write this song. As I wrote line after line, I noticed I quickly started to feel better. After the writing process was complete, from then on, whenever I started feeling anxious I would either sing this song to myself or play the rough files through the speakers on my phone and it would genuinely help calm me. I think it works so well for me because it helps me acknowledge & identify what the problem is in a clear & simplified way without wasting any extra time before making efforts to resolve the issue.

I definitely had my reservations on revealing this side of me as part of my debut, but I think in doing so, it will help me to stay honest and real in my writing throughout my career. I’m just so grateful it’s finally out in the world. I hope it reaches far and wide, but most importantly I hope it reaches those who need to hear it most.

Punk Globe:  What is your writing process like?

Taylor: I could literally be doing anything and just suddenly feel the urge to write. Most of what I write starts with a line and a melody that pops into my head already intertwined with one another. Once I have one line, I always try to come up with at least the next 3 lines right then so I have a solid 4 line segment. Once I have that, I can start to get a feel for the message I want to convey through the piece. It all kind of flows and connects from there!

Punk Globe:  How many songs have you written?

Taylor: I have 10 songs with completed lyrics that are currently brought to life, and I have an additional 15 songs with partial or incomplete lyrics for the time being. Those numbers include a very personal, 5 song E.P. but does not include my upcoming debut album.

In my writing, I’ve touched on an array of real life issues such as peer pressure, loneliness, revenge, forgiveness, body image, and sexuality, as well as growing up, existing & surviving as a young woman in 2023.  I have a lot to say, and I’m eager to share my thoughts with you all.

Punk Globe: What’s coming in the future musically for Taylor Floyd?

Taylor: There’s a whole lot more art I want to put out there. It can be hard to always find the time for creative endeavours, but for me, it’s essential to living a fulfilling life. I recognize that not everyone feels that same level of fulfillment and satisfaction by creating art as myself and many others do. People can have fulfilling lives in many different ways through many different interests, but if absolutely no-one in this world created art, it would be a very boring place to live.

You can find ‘Anxiety’ on Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, Youtube, and 30+ additional streaming platforms worldwide!
