Tim Curry - VAGABOND
★
Grand Central Publishing/Hachette Book Group
Tim Curry is the people’s champ. For years, he distanced himself from his role as Dr. Frank N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show out of concern for being typecast. That was not the case. Curry was too talented. He has appeared on stage, screen and record, and while always keeping his appeal and charm, he was never the same in any role. But he has not
received any major awards for his massive amount of interesting work. His fans love him, and when he appeared on stage in the musicals The Pirates of Penzance and Me and My Girl, there were plenty of people there in RHPS shirts, enjoying other sides of Curry in person. That kind of devotion is better than any statue.
In his book Curry, after talking about his childhood and family, cuts to the chase and begins discussing the road to Rocky Horror. He spends a generous amount of time on RHPS as things he learns and applies to his performance come up later when he is tackling other roles. It is really a book about Curry’s acting and how he approaches his work. Early on, Curry claims that the book would not include tell-all sex adventures. Aside from discussing his mother and sister, he keeps his private life private. It’s an excellent book for actors, and Curry offers advice and encouragement to people who wish to follow in his footsteps. This tome is an easy read and comes with a generous amount of b/w photos from the collection of the author. He covers a lot of his stage work, and the parts concerning his recording career are of interest. I used to love watching the video for his signature song “I Do The Rock” on TV. He covers most of his excellent film work, adding a mention of his role in the film Congo, one of the few misfires he appeared in. One thing that I, as a reader and fan, was disappointed with was the lack of at least a few paragraphs about his appearance in Addams Family Reunion. Curry was a natural to play Gomez Addams, and I enjoyed his performance very much. Aside from that, Tim Curry fans will treasure the book.
