Let’s Talk Punk with Ronnie Quid
Interview By Lisa-PunkrPrincess
Punk Globe: HI thanks for chatting with us, can you tell us a little about your music background?
Ronnie: Certainly! Started playing here in the L.A. Club scene in the late ‘80’s, first with The Six Guns, then with the Cockney Mexicans. Mostly playing at Al’s Bar, Raji’s, The Garage, and then into the ‘90’s at Paladinos, Coconut Teaszer, McReds, and quite regularly at Mr. T’s Bowl. In the ‘90’s starting playing with a grungier, less punk outfit called The Cadre. Sadly, we disbanded due to political differences around 2000ish. I couldn’t be in a band with Bush Supporters!!
Anyhow, got back into a full-on punk band called Six Inches, and we started playing really good shows, opening for Flogging Molly, Babyland, The Stitches, and several others. We were at the Roxy, Whiskey, Troubadour, Key Club, and even in-store Record Shops. We were being courted by Enigma Records, but sadly, due to substance abuse, the band fell apart just as success seemed to be on the horizon. The abject disappointment of that band’s disintegration took me to a dark place, and I couldn’t fathom being in a band at that time. I wasn’t even playing for several years.
In 2005, I rekindled the old ‘90’s grunge outfit I was in previously, putting political differences aside. We played sporadically for several years, either at the Dollhut in Anaheim or a few venues out in the SFV or SGV. Then, illness(mental and physical) came to two of the members, so that derailed music for me in a band setting for 7-8 years. I started playing solo acoustic shows around 2017 and continued until January 2020, with the COVID pandemic bringing that to a halt.
Fortunately, the World Famous Dollhut in Anaheim continued having Live Shows outdoors, so I was able to resume my Solo acoustic performances. The Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa also permitted Live Shows, and that’s where I met a drummer who wanted to get together and start a band project. It was during quarantine that my GF/Life Mate VivDarling decided to learn the Bass Guitar at 59 years young. Within 5 months, she was ready to jam with the aforementioned drummer. By February 2021 we were able to play our first show as QuidPunkQuo, opening for the Mentors at Luis Segundo’s Motorcycle Shop in Garden Grove. We were very pleased that the audience response was quite positive. Then, after several more gigs, we were asked to be an opening act for The Dickies in June 2021, at the Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa.
QuidPunkQuo has been gigging regularly ever since, all over So. Cal. and several times a year in Las Vegas. We recorded a 7 Song Mini LP at Blank Reel Studios in Riverside. The product is called AHORITA!, which means right now in Spanish. We are currently a Trio with Mike Avila from Children of Eden on drums. We had several drummers throughout, and we’re confident Mike will be our mainstay. He’s quite powerful and understands the dynamics of VivDarling and my songwriting. Viv has flourished as a bassist, lead vocalist, and songwriter in the band. Her story of learning an instrument for the first time in her life at 59, is certainly one to be told. Viv and I also started an acoustic duet called the Sophistos, which is both original and cover songs we enjoy playing, which aren’t necessarily punk, but still with passion, energy, and incendiary lyrics. We are performing as a quartet at the moment with two high school mates on drums and lead guitar. Robert ROBOJAX Armendariz and David Leonard. Both alumni from Mountain View HS in El Monte Ca. David taught me the basics when I got my first acoustic guitar during our Senior Year in 1982. We’ll be recording an EP in March at Blank Reel Studios as well, as QuidPunkQuo continues to perform Live concurrently. We are excited for several upcoming Shows, most notably the Whatever68 Radio 14th Anniversary Festival at the Bancroft in Spring Valley on April 4th.
We are also looking forward to our March 7th show with the great 80’s Mod/Power Pop band The Question. Quite a bit to look forward to in 2026! We have also submitted our cracking Punk Protest Song USOFHATE! to the upcoming Resistance Compilation that will be released in June. USOFHATE! has been featured on Whatever 68 Radio for several airings on their worldwide Streaming Show on Saturday mornings. We are trying desperately as a band and individuals to maintain positivity, optimism, and focus during these very difficult and unprecedented times in our country. We will strive to be the best and Rockinest band on the circuit. We know how to be fun, groovy, and intense with our song compositions and our Live Shows. People dance at our Gigs, which makes it all worthwhile!
Punk Globe: Describe your local music scene.
Ronnie: Definitely thriving! Lots of venues and events to be considered at all times. The bars, pubs, and microbreweries all want live bands, and Punk bands are certainly in demand. There are skateparks, billiard halls, VFW halls, Record Stores, nightclubs, pizza restaurants, bowling alleys, etc., that are all willing to host and book Punk and Ska shows. It’s a great time to be in a band….
Punk Globe: What’s the most bizarre thing that’s ever happened to you at a show?
Ronnie: Several things over the years, I must say….
I suppose, young females baring their breasts at me during a performance was slightly bizarre. Also, following up after a band at Al’s Bar, and the center stage was covered in corn tortillas, small stuffed animals, and boxing gloves. That episode turned out fun for us during our Set because we made use of all the disarray items and started throwing them at the audience throughout our Set. Needless to say, it was a fun and unusual set, especially for the crowd members who picked up the boxing gloves. By the time we finished our set, there was a blanket of tortillas everywhere you stepped in the bar. They were flying like edible frisbees as one could imagine.
Fun and bizarre night indeed!
Punk Globe: What pet would you love to have?
Ronnie: Only one: the Black kitten my son Evan brought home from school. He named him Elvis StarLord, and he is the sweetest, coolest cat you could ever hope to encounter. He’s now fully grown at 24 lbs., so he’s quite the Mini House Panther. He has the most endearing meow, and he loves Muenster cheese and vanilla yogurt….
I want him to live forever!
Punk Globe: What are your interests outside of music?
Ronnie: Definitely Art, all genres and styles, and many periods. Jaguar Cars are definitely a passion. I’ve owned 6, and I’ve regretted parting ways with several of them. They can be a bit expensive to repair, and on a working-class income, it can be a tough endeavor to allocate my limited income towards. Enjoying intelligent conversation with forward-thinking individuals is also of great interest. Avoiding narcissists and most importantly avoiding MAGA Supporters-biggest group of dumbfucks on the planet. Having said that, sharing, exploring, and/or exposing necessary Truths that need to be understood and accepted. I’m interested in scientific discoveries and the relevance they bring to our modern existence.
Punk Globe: Tell us about a favorite show (you have played or seen)
Ronnie: I’ve had many, so, so many favorites, but most recently we played at Brue Crue in Riverside. Nobody had heard us before, but the crowd danced to every song in the Set. That’s something I hope to occur at every gig, so that was quite satisfying and uplifting….
As far as Live Concerts, I’ve seen some amazing bands that just blew my head clean off. Some were not even Punk. David Bowie’s Serious Moonlight Tour was quite beyond belief. Lou Reed on the New Sensations Tour, Sonic Youth EVOL Tour at the Roxy, Husker Du New Day Rising
Tour at the Roxy, the Jam at Perkins Palace, PIL at the Palladium ‘84, so many others, that were just amazing….
Punk Globe: Who or what are your biggest inspirations?
Ronnie: Musically, Joe Strummer, David Bowie, D. Boon, Burt Bacharach, Thelonius Monk, Sonic Youth, Pete Townshend, Paul Weller, Marvin Gaye, Leland Sklar
Art Influences: Siqueiros, Calder, Kahlo, Keifer, Norton Wisdom, Lalo Alcaraz,
Literature: ee Cummings, E. M. Forster, Nicholas Shaffner, PG Wodehouse
Cinema: W. Allen, Curtiz, Welles, Hitchcock, Fellini, Altman, David Lynch
Philosophical: Chomsky, Goodall, Obama, Thom Hartman
Punk Globe: You are off to defend the world. Who is going with you?
Ronnie: VivDarling(Life Mate) and my children, Alexandra, Elise, and Evan Nicholas. All 3 are tough warriors!!
Punk Globe: Who are some of your favorite indie bands?
Ronnie: Unsigned indie bands, definitely Children of Eden, Shubees, Panic Movement, Get in Loser, BATE, many others!!
Punk Globe: Any upcoming events we should know about?
Ronnie: Well, the Big Beautiful 14th anniversary show of Whatever 68 Radio on 4/4/26 at the Bancroft! May 2nd at the Double Down Saloon in Las Vegas. OC FAIR is also on the horizon, Date TBA. So, it’ll definitely be an exciting and memorable 2026!!
Punk Globe: Any shoutouts?
Ronnie: So many!! Eden Entertainment most certainly! They’ve provided QPQ with many great shows and opportunities. Jason Fierro and Daniel Archibeque at Blank Reel Studios! DJ ModMusa, he’s Superkool!! Philip Cusimano of The Question! PieBaby! She makes the best pastries!! Robert Armendariz and David Leonard of The Sophistos! Leland Sklar-Bass Legend who treats me so kindly when he visits my workplace. And most importantly, the Love of my Life, VivDarling Bassist Extraordinare!!
