Candy Clark, TIGHT HEADS (All Night Menu, 2025)

“Tight Heads collects old Polaroids of New Hollywood shot by actress Candy Clark in the 70s and 80s with the SX-70 shown on the cover. Clark was a prominent actress of the era (Fat City, American Graffiti, The Man Who Fell To Earth, etc) and a fixture in the LA social scene, engaging a network of actors, writers, artists, agents, authors, directors, and others. Some were lovers, many were friends. Collectively, her portraits capture a rich sampling of the period’s movers and shakers, from David Bowie to Teri Garr, George Lucas, Robin Williams, Carrie Fisher, Ed Ruscha, and beyond.

There’s Baryshnikov in the tub, Spielberg buzzed in a pub, and Nicole Brown Simpson looking glum next to O.J.
Photographically speaking, these are casual snapshots flashed quickly while socializing. Clark’s instant karma’s gonna get you and crop closely around your face if she can. Most are headshots, or “Tight Heads” to use the title phrase. All are reproduced at actual size on black backgrounds, with white borders intact and spot varnish to confer authentic physicality. Photos are set across the spreads from Clark’s written memories. Throw several dozen together in a book and it’s a veritable Candy Clark Rolodex and a nice historical reference to boot.
Speaking of history, Sam Sweet’s introduction sketches an overview of Clark’s life path from Texas to CA, the making of the photos, and their later discovery and reappraisal. “Hollywood is a history of men looking at women through cameras,” writes Sweet. “Never had the lens been turned on them by the ingenue.” Hmm. Maybe it was that role reversal that stymied the photos’ initial reception. In any case, their roundabout course to publication is all too familiar in photo land: Stuffed in a box, ignored for decades, then eventually released into the wild like elder hatchlings. Hope they find their way to nesting grounds. Along the journey, the book manages a tricky feat. Candy Clark only appears in a few images, but she is the central presence throughout. To tell your inner story while focused on the outer world, that’s true photo mojo.”

When a Polaroid was taken, everyone stopped and watched it develop. It was true magic to see it happen. Instant pictures. Unheard of. —Candy Clark
