Move Over Madonna and Lady GaGa TILLI has Arrived
Interview By: Ginger Coyote
Most readers will realize I am a huge fan of Tilli. I decided to get her down to answer some questions about her recording projects. I would like to thank Tilli for taking time from her very busy schedule to do this interview. I hope you all enjoy…
Punk Globe; Congratulations on the success of your release of ‘Wild Thing’ You did a great version of the song. What made you pick ‘Wild Thing’ to cover?
Tilli: Hi Ginger thank you! I love the song Wild Thing. It has this great swagger to it and makes people listen up and move.
The very talented Elijah Sokolow and I were working on some songs that I had written, and we decided we needed one more! Just one more… we saw an old video in French by The Pretenders… but how to make it fresh and have it be authentic sounding was the challenge !! I speak French so we came up with this version that had enough French in it to be interesting but the rest is in English ‘cause the lyrics are great. And to me, it is one of the best rock songs ever written… Thank you, Chip Taylor!
Punk Globe: What are your thoughts on The Troggs and X versions of the song?
Tilli: When I first heard the Troggs version of Wild Thing I was a little kid and probably in the car with my young and fun teenage aunt Cathy. She and her friends would hear it on the radio and go mad and I thought that was pretty cool.
X‘s version is so anthemic and raucous that it makes you feel a whole different way … kind of like a rumble will happen and you want to be there.
Punk Globe: Where did you record and who is playing and doing what on this recording?
Tilli: We recorded a lot of it in my house where Elijah played and recorded the instrumentation and my vocals … He played all kinds of things from guitars to a Turkish pot instrument and my wonky old piano. It then got moved to the next stage in a larger studio with the smashing Producer Mikal Reid who mixed it and “ did additional production. More wow was added by the ever-so-skilled Jonathan Lea who spiced it with guitar and fuzzy bass. Lastly, the whole of it was mastered in Nashville by Brian Foraker. It takes a village!
Punk Globe: Are you with a label or is this an Indy release? If it is an Indy release did you find a distributor to get it out?
Tilli: It’s an indie release and therefore it’s been a tremendous amount of work, but rewarding nonetheless !! It was generously picked up by the Indie radio stations and especially through a contact in the UK where they very organically got the word out by playing it a lot and I feel so grateful and flattered. It’s crazy !! At one point it was number five in the world on all the indie radio stations… Glorious!!! ****+++ Rock Radio UK with Roger Nicholls and Mimmo!
And lots of posting and help from friends goes into an indie release.
Punk Globe: How did Rodney Bingenheimer get involved?
Tilli: Rodney, Bingenheimer got involved when someone sent him the track and he took a listen. He played it for quite a few weeks along with another song of mine Spin Spin! It was, therefore… a Brilliant experience ! Everybody would like to have their song played by Rodney … it’s exciting
Punk Globe Do you have a video out for ‘Wild Thing’?
Tilli: I have a video made by the wonderful cinematographer Gilbert Salas with a very talented group of people participating … it came together through much effort but it finally worked! Bearded ladies, clown and strongman, fortune teller, and all the circus inside me! I took this song as a way to wake up your own wild thing inside … I feel it’s really important to stay wild in whatever way you can.
Punk Globe: I understand that you have a new release coming out. What can you tell us about that?
Tilli: DREAMY! Yes, it just premiered on the UK Radio show Imaginarium! It’s another song about transformation, and I wrote it about a real person I witnessed going through some difficult times and it stuck to me like poetry. This song was recorded with Alain Johannes in his studio where he produced and played all the instruments and my vocals. It then went to Producer Mikal Reid once again and Jonathan Lea laid down some trembling mellotron and Uni-vibe guitar for more hotness haha!
Punk Globe: You have also been busy filming a new video
Tilli: Yes, I am in the process of finalizing the filming right now with the very talented Susan Primorac. I like to use Los Angeles in my videos… I live in Hollywood. I see it’s Beauty and I see it’s craziness. So we have been shooting in different locales, and tonight we’re going to hit the lights on Broadway! Later we are heading into Japantown and down by the cornfield.
Punk Globe: Are you filming the video in a studio or remote
Tilli: Mostly we are filming in downtown LA which is a very compelling area of old Los Angeles. A lot is going on there with shreds of the past found in the beautiful old buildings and theaters … and we are filming guerilla style so you have to be creative!
People are fairly tolerant here because it is Hollywood after all!
