Page numbered 283 of #Project2025 document bemoans the very creation and existence of Medicare and goes so far as to specifically blame the entire US national deficit on Medicare and Medicaid, rather than, say, I don’t know, tax breaks for the wealthy. On page 283 “The general welfare” It says and I quote* –
“In essence, our deficit problem is a Medicare and Medicaid problem.”
It says in that section that from 1967-2020 those programs cost $17.8Trillion and over the same (uh several decades long) timeframe, the federal deficit grew by $17.9Trillion. That’s a neat trick, but your choosing specific dates and numbers doesn’t mean they are related to the exclusion of all else.
Per ProPublica, dump in his term increased the deficit by $ 7.8 trillion, mostly through tax breaks for the wealthy. In one term! Where’s the outrage?! Oh right – let’s blame programs for the elderly and sick instead. The 1-year budget for Medicare and Medicaid is about $ 1 trillion. Dump ballooned the deficit by about 8 times that amount.
Note that during the 53 years of deficit growth mentioned above, the Uber wealthy have seen their taxes drop precipitously. In the early 1960s, the top tax rate for the wealthy was 90%; now the top rate is about 37%.
