One thing that is certain, entertainment-wise this is ‘The Loonies’ in their best form, ‘Wheelie’ is his usual engaging self, with no shortage of humorous banter between tracks, if this release doesn’t make you laugh or at least smile then you’re probably dead and your mates are too afraid to tell you.

Onto the important bit, the music. Into their forty-minute set they have managed to squeeze in pretty much all the live favorites, which also includes a few unreleased tracks; opening with ‘Playing Silly Buggers’ resplendent with crazy riffs and kazoo solos, a live favorite of mine, then the addictively up-tempo, short sharp ‘No Rules’, followed by everyone’s live favorite ‘Fancied by People I Don’t Fancy’ with its catchy groove and tongue twister chorus “I’m fancied by people we don’t fancy but the people I fancy don’t fancy me”, which seems straight forward until you try singing it, at speed.

‘Attack of the Molemen’ brings more kazoo solos, sadly at the end Wheelie announces that “I think we’ve got that bloody kazoo out of the way now!” because I love ‘Loonies’ kazoo solos, even more than I love Black Metal banjo solos (yes it’s a real thing!). Next an unreleased piece, the punchy up-tempo ‘Art or Arse?’  which asks that all-important question “Is it art or is it arse?!” …I still don’t know the answer but I love the song, the next number ‘The Last Post’ is dedicated to posties everywhere…but not necessarily for the reasons you might think.

Next another crowd favorite ‘Anarchists Make the Best Lovers’ which always gets the crowd singing, followed by another unreleased track ‘Humans’  which examines the human creature from a ‘Loonies’ perspective than ‘Cool Britannia Uber Alles’ another favorite of mine, hugely addictive with groovy second half leadwork, you can’t fail to dance around to this, closely followed by ‘Dick Dastardly’ one of “Poundpants” favorites, yes, it is about the antihero of the Wacky Races, addictive, very silly and utterly brilliant.

Then the catchy ‘Kill That Nazi (in my head)’ with its militaristic rhythms and groovy bass lines followed by the final unreleased piece the hugely humorous ‘The Messerschmitt Pilot’s Severed Hand’ …. which apparently is a sentient object …. with a mind of its own….. sounds like an excuse to me, a good one though, ending appropriately with ‘Bloody Drunkards’ which warns of the perils of drinking…… droopy willies and all that.

So, if you fancy a slice of “Old School, Anarcho, Cabaret Punk” then this is the album for you, it’ll put a smile on your face for sure. ‘Black Rat and Prosecco – Live in Bristol’ is available now as a digital download from https://loonies.bandcamp.com/music along with their other releases and accompanying paraphernalia and is currently much easier to get hold of than a bottle of Black Rat Cider….It’ll last longer too!!
